The area’s most advanced care for the diseases and conditions that affect the aorta – the body’s largest artery. Aortic disease poses significant health risks and include aneurysms (focal dilation of the aorta), dissection (a tear in the wall off the aorta), and blockages associated with PAD (peripheral arterial disease.

The Brain Tumor Program offers a comprehensive, multi-specialty, neurosurgical center providing advanced care for brain tumors. The state-of-the-art modalities routinely employed at the Brain Tumor Program provide minimal invasion and maximum precision in the treatment of brain tumors for adults and children..

The program pioneered the use of intra-operative MRI scans, and University Hospital was the first hospital in the U.S. to utilize a compact OR-based MRI system to obtain “real-time” images of the brain before, during and after surgery. The hospital has installed the second generation of this technology. The precise nature of these images ensures surgical navigation that minimizes risk of harming healthy and/or eloquent areas of the brain while providing maximum lesion removal.

Located in Newark, NJ, the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey at University Hospital (CINJ at UH) is home to a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who work together to provide patients with the most advanced cancer care available.  Our clinical cancer team works collaboratively to create a highly individualized plan of care and will provide support and coordination throughout your cancer journey.

We offer expertise in the treatment of head and neck, gynecologic, breast, lung, gastrointestinal, liver, and bone cancers, as well as soft tissue sarcomas, genitourinary cancers, and central nervous system cancers.  The division of hematology-oncology provides care for patients with various blood related disorders and related malignancies.

CINJ at UH invests in state-of-the-art technology across every department in the program. Our daVinci robotic surgery technology allows for minimally invasive techniques when cancer surgery is needed, leading to minimal down time for patients and faster recovery for certain tumors.

Our Breast Imaging Center is equipped with breast 3-D tomosynthesis imaging machines to ensure a higher level of cancer detection. Through a State of New Jersey grant, our Radiation Oncology department is implementing a True Beam linear accelerator. This advanced radiotherapy system targets cancer with greater efficacy and minimizes side effects to surrounding tissue.

The Infusion Center offers a full range of chemotherapeutic services as well as supportive therapy services to help mitigate the impacts of cancer in a safe outpatient setting. Our nurses are highly trained and maintain credentialing through the Oncology Nursing Society.

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey at University Hospital benefits from research being conducted by more than 200 faculty members at Rutgers Cancer Institute. Our collaboration with Rutgers Cancer Institute allows us to offer nationally sponsored cancer clinical trials and industry sponsored clinical trials.  Our patients can participate in cancer clinical trials without needing to travel.

Welcome to University Hospital Community Pharmacy

We now offer specialty pharmacy services designed to simplify every aspect of your care.

University Hospital provides the City of Newark and Greater Newark area with a comprehensive emergency medical service (“Newark EMS”) system that includes basic and advanced life support ambulances, a “state of the art” Regional Emergency Medical Communications System (“REMCS”), a heavy rescue unit and other specialized resources for disaster response. Paramedic services in NJ must be hospital-based by law and the Hospital holds the Certificate of Need to provide Advanced Life Support (“ALS”) in the cities of Newark, Orange and East Orange. A dedicated ALS ambulance is also stationed at Newark Liberty International Airport to provide services there and for Port Newark and Elizabeth. Paramedics bring the Hospital’s Emergency Room to the patient providing the highest level of care to patients suffering life threatening illness or injury. Basic Life Support (“BLS”) ambulances are staffed by Emergency Medical Technicians (“EMTs”) and respond to all requests for an ambulance in the City of Newark. REMCS receives and processes all 9-1-1requests for ambulances and dispatches the appropriate level of EMS resources to those requests in Newark and the Greater Newark area. REMCS also serves as the state-wide communications center for all air medical helicopters operating in NJ. REMCS is also the designated communications center for the NJ EMS Task Force and for coordinating any mutual aid responses between the State of NJ and City of New York. The Newark EMS Rescue Unit provides vehicle extrication and other highly specialized rescue services when required. Newark EMS also hosts highly specialized resources for disaster response and is an anchor agency for the NJ EMS Task Force.

The Newark EMS responds to more than 120,000 calls for assistance each year.  The unit was recognized by the American Heart Association with the highest award possible for treating patients suffering from the deadliest form of heart attack. It is the only EMS unit in New Jersey honored with this award.

Staffed by highly experienced emergency medicine specialists, the Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Emergency Department at University Hospital provides care to adults and children with minor to acute illnesses and injuries from cuts and abrasions to the flu, from microsurgery to head trauma.

Because University Hospital is the principal teaching hospital of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), our emergency medical staff can easily consult with on-call medical specialists who also work at Rutgers, including surgeons, neurologists and cardiologists. University Hospital takes extra precautions to prevent the spread of infections in our EDs, including the use of their isolation rooms to keep all patients safe.

Working side by side with the Eric Muñoz Trauma Center, the only Level I Trauma Center in northern New Jersey, the department offers the highest level of care. University Hospital’s Emergency Department is the busiest emergency department in the State of New Jersey with more than 100,000 visits annually.

In addition to the Trauma Center, the Emergency Department offers:

• Adult Acute Care
• Pediatric Emergency Department – offering care to injured and ill children in a cheerful, self-contained area.
• Psychiatric Emergency Department – a locked and supervised area that provides care to individuals in crisis
• Fast Track Area – to provide expedited care to adults with minor illness and injuries

University Hospital also receives patients via air transport through our partnership with the Northern Shock Trauma Air Rescue (NorthSTAR). Together with our ground-based critical care transport service and our University Hospital-based fleet of EMS ambulances, we provide the people of the Newark community, as well as the people of New Jersey, with state-of-the-art emergency medical care.

In addition, the Emergency Department staff is highly trained to respond to disasters, both natural and man-made, including acts of terrorism.

One out of every eight women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis at some point during their lifetime. Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer for women after skin cancer.   It is the number 2 cause of deaths from cancer after lung cancer.  Detecting the disease early is crucial for increasing survival rates.

Being female and aging are the most prominent risk factors for breast cancer. Surprisingly, over 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history or high-risk factors associated with the disease. Hence, regular screening is essential, even if you don’t possess these risk factors.

University Hospital along with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School has established a mobile mammography program, Mammography in Motion, bringing advanced diagnostic technology to our community.  Our primary objective is to ensure that all women aged 40 and above receive annual screening mammograms. Our aim is to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages when it is most treatable.

The Center for Advanced Liver Diseases and Transplant opened in 1989 and is the first liver transplant center in New Jersey. It is noteworthy to mention, since its opening, the Center has performed more than 1600 liver transplants. Recently, the United States made lifesaving history by reaching 1 million organ transplants. As a member of the United Network of Organ Transplants, University Hospital is proud to have played a part in this historic milestone.

WHO WE ARE

University Hospital is licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and certified by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Our stroke center provides both in-hospital and outpatient care to patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.  We serve the community from the city of Newark and outlying communities.

Our Center has doctors with advanced training in all types of stroke and in diseases that put patients at risk for stroke, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

We deliver advanced, state of the art emergency stroke care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Our doctors are experts in removing clots from the blood vessels in the brain, which in certain cases can save brain cells from dying.  Patients who are treated early enough once the symptoms of stroke start may recover with little or no disability.

As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, UH strives to erase barriers to stroke care.  Stroke policies and processes and multilingual services ensure that all patients have equal access to our services, and practitioners from medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, assist in the evaluation and treatment of the risk factors so prevalent in our patient population.

The Eric Muñoz Trauma Center at University Hospital is the sole Level I Trauma Center for the densely populated region of northern New Jersey. With its multiple missions of clinical service, research and education, our Trauma Center is a leader in the advancement of trauma care in the state and the nation. The State designated our center the Level 1 Trauma Center to serve northern New Jersey in 1987, joining two others that serve the central and southern portions of the Garden State.

Working in concert with University Hospital’s Emergency Department, Emergency Medical Services, the NorthSTAR air rescue program, area MICU programs, and scores of volunteer rescue squads throughout the region, the Trauma Center brings skillful care to the most severely injured patients during the critical “Golden Hour.” The Trauma Center also receives referrals from secondary trauma centers and community hospitals throughout the region, especially for complex trauma cases in specialties like ophthalmology and neurosurgery, and for challenging spinal cord and head injuries.

Virtual Urgent Care is real-time access to a doctor through video chat. Adults and children ages 5 and older can connect with a board-certified or board-eligible emergency physician from Rutgers while you are at home, work, or on the go. Our doctors provide a convenient and private way to treat minor conditions that may require prompt attention when the doctor’s office is closed or when you are between your regular appointments. A referral is not needed to see one of our Virtual Urgent Care doctors.

Virtual Urgent Care is available from 7:00am until 11:00pm, 7 days a week.

What do we treat?
Our Virtual Urgent Care treats non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that do not require an in-person evaluation or emergency visit. Typical concerns include colds, rashes, urinary tract infections, and sprains. VUC is not intended for patients with serious emergencies. For such emergencies, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

How is it different than coming to the Emergency Department (AKA “When to just call 911”)?
Medical emergencies such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, choking, significant bleeding, stroke-related symptoms, poisonings, overdoses, or thoughts that could result in personal harm or harm to others require immediate care and cannot be treated in Virtual Urgent Care. Also, some conditions require an in-person visit to the doctor and cannot be treated through Virtual Urgent Care. Your Virtual Urgent Care doctor may instruct you to either go to the nearest emergency department or arrange a visit with your primary care provider if your condition requires an in-person evaluation.

And remember: please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you think that you or a loved one could be suffering from a medical emergency.

Conditions not appropriate for Virtual Urgent Care include the following:

• Signs of heart attack, including chest pain or difficulty breathing
• Signs of stroke, such as sudden onset slurred speech, numbness, one-sided muscle weakness
• Severe pain that does not improve with over the counter medications
• Poisoning or overdose (Call New Jersey Poison Information & Education System at 1-800-222-1222)
• Coughing up or vomiting blood
• Severe wounds, cuts, or amputations
• Severe abdominal pain
• Genital complaints

When should I call my own doctor or schedule a primary care visit?
Virtual Urgent Care is not intended to replace a visit to a regular doctor for routine healthcare needs such as check-ups, preventative care, and an annual physical. However, your Virtual Urgent Care physician can assist you in determining the best next steps for your care and can help you identify a primary care provider if needed. How much does it cost?
We are committed to making high-quality, convenient tele-medicine services affordable for as many people as possible. We accept all forms of insurance, as well as participate in the New Jersey Hospital Care Payment Assistance Program (Charity Care). A co-pay may apply to your visit. Additionally, we provide self-pay services at a nominal rate. Your patient care representative will be able to advise you when you call in. There is no charge to speak with a representative.

The Weight Management Center of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) at University Hospital aims to address the epidemic of obesity in Northern New Jersey (NJ) and Essex County. The prevalence of obesity in the country, and across New Jersey has continually risen over the past three decades.

Most people with obesity think their weight is something they can manage on their own. They believe if they eat less and move more, they will achieve results. However, research shows it is not that simple. A person’s weight is related to many factors, including some that are out of a person’s control, like genetics, their environment, lifestyle, or other medical conditions. We recognize that obesity is a complex disease and we want to be your partners to reach your weight goals for living a healthier life.

The Weight Management Center of Rutgers NJMS at University Hospital provides a comprehensive approach to treat obesity and its complications. The Center brings together a multidisciplinary team of board-certified obesity medicine physician specialists, endocrinologists, bariatric surgeons, advanced bariatric endoscopists, behavioral health specialists, nutritionists, and patient navigators. Our team works collaboratively to help patients achieve meaningful weight loss and improve their overall health throughout their lifetime.

Patients also have access to specialty services such as cardiology, pulmonology, psychiatry, hepatology, and gastroenterology. The distinguishing feature of our center, compared to stand-alone bariatric programs, is our coordinated patient-centered approach that offers either a medically supervised weight loss program, surgical management, or a combination of both.
