The Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery  has a long history of treating patients with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related surrounding structures in the head and neck. In addition to providing excellent patient care in general otolaryngology, the staff provide fellowship-trained expertise in various otolaryngology subspecialties, including skull base cancer surgery, otology/neurotology, pediatric otolaryngology, surgical oncology, and microvascular reconstructive surgery.

The highly specialized areas of Otology and Neurotology provide  treatment for disorders such as temporal bone tumors, including acoustic neuromas and glomus tumors, vertigo and other balance disorders, as well as, Meniere’s. Strong collaborative efforts within the specialties of neurosurgery, neuro otology, plastic surgery and craniofacial surgery assure an optimal approach for the most complex procedures, including pediatric otolaryngology, and skull base surgery. Anterior skull base approaches are used to treat a wide range of lesions, including traumatic, infectious, neoplastic and pituitary conditions. Precise imaging techniques, including intraoperative MRI, are employed, as well as advances in robotic-assisted and endoscopic surgery. Posterior approaches are employed with the assistance of neuro-otologists to treat patients with acoustic neuromas and other tumors of the cerebellopontine angle, tumors of the juglar foramen, as well as traumatic injuries to the facial nerve.

The Audiology Service offers a full range of auditory evaluation and rehabilitation including conventional audiometry, impedance typanometry, electronystagmography, and brainstem evoked audiometry. Patients with tinnitus are evaluated and rehabilitated. The Cochlear Implant Center offers surgical treatment for patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss, who cannot obtain benefit from hearing aids and whose hearing loss is due to damaged inner ear hair cells. In addition patients with hoarseness or disorders of phonation are evaluated and treated by a laryngologist.
