The University Hospital bariatric team includes board-certified and fellowship- trained surgeons who specialize in bariatrics, registered nurses, and a registered dietitian. All team members are committed to helping surgical candidates achieve their weight loss and health goals.

Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery
Our complete approach to weight management can help prevent or control the development of many co-occurring conditions that result from obesity.  For people who are obese, losing at least some of their excess weight always brings health benefits – often dramatic ones. Though weight loss surgery is not right for everyone, it can make a life-altering difference for people who have struggled unsuccessfully to lose weight. Studies have shown that bariatric surgery can:

  • Improve or even cure diabetes
  • Reduce severity of asthma symptoms
  • Diminish sleep apnea
  • Lower your risk of heart disease
  • Improve mobility, reduce joint problems
  • Reduce risk of certain types of cancer
  • Potentially resolve infertility issues
  • Address other common weight-related conditions and related illnesses

Seminars

To introduce prospective patients to bariatric surgery, University Hospital encourages those interested in weight loss surgery to attend a free seminar. These seminars provide an opportunity for patients to learn more about weight loss surgery, meet the physicians, and meet the bariatric support team who will guide patients on their journey. The seminar also addresses topics like risks and benefits, diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and insurance coverage, and more.

To register for a seminar, email us at bariatrics@uhnj.org or call 973-972-7151 and select Option 2.
