Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging

University Hospital offers one of the few academic multidisciplinary non-invasive cardiovascular (heart) imaging programs in the region.  The program combines the diagnostic, treatment, education, and research expertise of multiple disciplines, including cardiology, radiology, nuclear medicine, surgery, molecular biology and physics.  The program at University Hospital offers the most sophisticated and most advanced non-invasive and minimally invasive diagnostic tools to evaluate, diagnoses and manage heart disease.

Many tests are used to diagnose heart disease.  University Hospital offers the latest in:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG):
  • Holter monitoring:
  • Stress testing
  • Cardiopulmonary Stress Test
  • Echocardiography

To schedule an Echocardiography appointment please call: 973-972-7123

Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography or echo) is a noninvasive test that uses sound waves to see detailed images of the heart and surrounding structures. A small probe sends sound waves, which the patient does not feel or hear, through the body.  It is a valuable way to evaluate normal heart function or abnormalities of the heart and valves.

University Hospital’s Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging team offers the following echocardiography testing:

  • Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)
  • Additional techniques:
    • “Bubble Study” or Saline Contrast
    • Contrast
    • Strain
    • 4-D imaging
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
  • Stress echocardiography

(Heart) CT

To schedule a Cardiac CT appointment please call: 973-972-7123

Cardiac (heart) computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive test that can be used to evaluate various parts of the heart.

University Hospital’s Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging team offers the following advanced Cardiac CT testing:

  • Coronary Artery Calcium Score
  • Coronary CT Angiography
  • Cardiac CT for Structure
  • Cardiac CT for planning Cardiac Procedures

Cardiac MRI

To schedule a Cardiac MRI appointment please call: 973-972-7123

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), is a non-invasive imaging technology that is used to evaluate the function and structure of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. CMR is based on the same principles as regular or conventional MRI, but is optimized for viewing the heart.

University Hospital’s Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging team offers the following advanced Cardiac MRI testing:

  • CMR for structure
  • CMR for viability
  • CMR for myocarditis
  • CMR for infiltrative diseases
  • CMR for patients with arrhythmias
  • CMR for valvular heart disease
  • CMR for pericardial disease

Nuclear Cardiology

To schedule a Nuclear Cardiology appointment please call: 973-972-6022

Nuclear imaging of the heart uses low doses of radioactive tracers injected into the body to produce images of the heart. This helps doctors evaluate the heart’s function and diagnose different conditions such as the extent and location of a heart attack, assess inflammation within the heart muscle and vessels, and investigate areas of potential infection in the heart.

University Hospital’s Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging team offers the following advanced Nuclear Cardiology testing:

  • Nuclear Stress Testing
  • Nuclear Viability Imaging
  • PET/CT (positron emission tomography/computed tomography) for Viability
  • Cardiac Sarcoid PET/CT and SPECT imaging
  • MUGA
  • Nuclear Imaging to Assess Cardiac Amyloidosis
  • Blood Volume Measurement

Vascular Ultrasound

To schedule a Vascular Ultrasound appointment please call: 973-972-7123

Vascular ultrasound is a noninvasive test that uses sound waves to see detailed images of the vessels of the body. A small probe sends sound waves, which the patient does not feal or hear, through the body.  It is a valuable way to evaluate veins and arteries of the body.

Studies we perform:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm Ultrasound screening
  • Carotid Artery Duplex Ultrasound
  • Arterial Duplex Ultrasound
  • Venous Duplex Ultrasound
