Musculoskeletal Oncology is the orthopedic subspecialty that focuses on the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of bones, muscles, tendons and joints. The treatment of tumors may require surgical intervention such as biopsy for diagnosis, tumor resection with local treatment, tumor resection with major limb reconstruction or amputation. In nearly all cases, a team approach is necessary to ensure that surgery is combined with appropriate radiation therapy or chemotherapy when indicated. Treatment of such problems is very complicated and requires the coordination of a team of specialists including oncologists (medical cancer specialists), radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists.

Our physicians are fellowship trained and well-recognized experts in the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors. Together with this Musculoskeletal tumor team, Dr. Benevenia, Dr. Patterson, and Dr. Beebe provide state of the art care for patients with these often life-threatening problems. They specialize in limb-salvage and limb-sparing procedures for the treatment of tumors in both the adult and pediatric patient. They have developed new techniques for preserving limb growth in pediatric patients after tumor treatment. In addition, they also treat complex salvage of failed total joint arthroplasty and aggressive musculoskeletal infections with bone destruction.
