Nuclear Testing

University Hospital (UH) offers a full range of nuclear medical testing on all patient populations, including those who weigh up to 500 pounds.

During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States, and the rates remain high. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 35.7 percent of adults and 17 percent of children in America are obese. This population is at increased risk for a number of medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoarthritis, which are often diagnosed using nuclear testing.

UH is one of only a few hospitals in the region with a gamma imaging system that provides a comfortable bed designed specifically for obese patients. This state-of-the-art equipment is also more versatile than most, with a wide variety of possible configurations that do not require patients to be moved. UH performs a full range of nuclear tests, including oncology studies, infectious imaging, and all organ systems studies. In addition, the hospital’s two dedicated nuclear medicine physicians are certified by the Board of Nuclear Cardiology and can perform myocardial perfusion studies.

Patients are usually scheduled within one week and results are reported within 48 hours in whatever modality the referring physician prefers.
