Podiatric Residency Program
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery with Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery
The Podiatric Residency Program at University Hospital was founded in 1989. The three year residency is an intense program which involves all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery that attracts the best podiatric students throughout the United States.
The University Hospital Podiatric Residency is a Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) approved program. Upon completion residents receive a certificate indicating Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency with Reconstructive Rearfoot/ Ankle Surgery (PMSR/RRA).
After completion the residents from University Hospital are highly competent in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, trauma and diabetic limb salvage. The residency program exceeds all minimum activity volumes set by CPME. The residents are developed to practice with ethical standards and to become leaders in the podiatric community.
University Hospital
The Podiatric Residency Program is sponsored by University Hospital, Newark, New Jersey. University Hospital is a 5 l 9-bed hospital which serves as the principle teaching hospital for the Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School. University Hospital is the center of referral for many of New Jersey’s most advanced medical services and specialty care programs, including podiatry. The hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center is also the busiest trauma center in the state.
In addition to University Hospital, residents also care for patients at Hackensack University Medical Center, Holy Name Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Mountainside Medical Center, and Metropolitan Surgery Center.
Exposure to Pathology
Patients come to University Hospital from all over the world with complex lower extremity deformities and complicated conditions. The residents are exposed to a wide variety of pathology that is usually not encountered in a community hospital.
Residents are trained in reconstructive foot and ankle procedures that include pathology related to Charcot neuroarthropathy, neurovascular disorders, and congenital and degenerative conditions. University Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center provides the residents with extensive training in all aspects of foot and ankle trauma. All in patient and perioperative care is performed by the residents under the guidance of the attending staff of the Podiatry Department at University Hospital.

The Podiatry Clinic at University Hospital
The Podiatry Clinic at University Hospital serves as the outpatient Podiatric Residency training facility. The Podiatry Clinic at University Hospital, with over 5,000 patient visits annually, is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of all trauma and pathology which affects the foot and ankle. Because of its unique position in University Hospital, the Podiatry Clinic is able to offer the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, as well as an onsite referral network of every medical discipline. The mission of the Podiatry Clinic at University Hospital is to advance podiatric medicine through education and ongoing research. The Podiatry Clinic is located in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) on the campus of University Hospital.
The Vascular and Wound Care Center at University Hospital
The Vascular and Wound Care Center at University Hospital is a state of the art facility which provides evidence-based wound care therapy to patients with chronic wounds, including those of the lower extremity. The center is supported by physicians from the departments of Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Podiatry.
Resident Benefits
The podiatric residents receive salaries and benefits equal to their allopathic colleagues. The benefits include health insurance, 4 weeks paid vacation per year, meal allowance, along with yearly CME and book reimbursement. As the first author of a manuscript or poster presented at a conference, the resident’s cost for travel, hotel, and conference are paid for by the institution.
The residents have full access to the on campus Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School library. They also have the opportunity to conduct research and foster relationships with members of the internationally renowned medical staff at University Hospital.

Located in northern New Jersey, University Hospital is only 10 miles from New York City and all the “City That Never Sleeps” has to offer. Northern New Jersey is also home to fine dining and entertainment. University Hospital is only minutes away from the Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils, as well as in close proximity to the New York Mets, Yankees, Giants, Jets, Knicks. Rangers, Islanders, Brooklyn Nets, world renowned museums, theaters, zoos, apple picking, farms, skiing, hiking, and other leisure activities. The Jersey Shore is only a short drive away. The area is easily accessible to three major airports.
