This section treats and evaluates disorders of retina, macula, and vitreous including retinal detachment, macular degeneration, macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa (and allied diseases), and retinopathy of prematurity. Novel treatments for patients with complex retinal problems are conducted by the Department’s Center for Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research.

The Ophthalmic Imaging Center features the most sophisticated diagnostic image analysis equipment in New Jersey (including scanning laser ophthalmoloscopy and retinal topography as well as confocal fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography).

The Retinal Electrophysiology Laboratory, supported in part by the National Eye Institute and Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc., is one of the most sophisticated electrophysicologic diagnostic laboratories on the East Coast and conducts studies in electroretinography, electro-oculography, visual evoked potentials, macular blood flow, and blue cone ERG.

In addition to ongoing clinical research programs in macular degeneration, the Department conducts a major National Eye Institute-supported research program studying prevalence of and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in African-Americans with type I diabetes.
