University Hospital Opens First Community Health and Wellness Center, Expanding Access to High-Quality Care

New ambulatory care clinic in Newark’s Fairmount neighborhood also includes 78 affordable apartments for local residents

NEWARK, NJ: University Hospital opened its first Health and Wellness Center in Newark, New Jersey on July 1. The University Hospital Health and Wellness Center will provide a broad spectrum of health care services including primary care, preventive screenings, women’s health, point of care testing, and chronic condition management.

“The opening of University Hospital’s Health and Wellness Center represents our deep commitment to ensuring our community has accessible care that meets the depth and breadth of their health needs,” said Ed Jimenez, CEO and President of University Hospital. “The new center not only extends the reach of our academic medical center, but also has a dedicated space for community programming and health education events.”

As a community health clinic, the Center addresses social determinants of health and increases access to community-based, culturally-competent services for people with limited access to high-quality health care.

“Fairmount neighborhood residents deserve quality affordable housing and health care within walking distance of their homes,” said Newark City Mayor Ras Baraka. “The new Health and Wellness Center will have lasting impacts on our community, and I congratulate University Hospital on the opening of this health clinic.”

The center was developed under the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency’s Hospital Partnership Subsidy Program. The clinic sits beneath 78 affordable rental apartments for low- and moderate-income residents, including 16 units for unhoused individuals and families.

“It is exciting to see years of collaborative effort to provide high quality housing and community-based medical services come to fruition,” said Melanie Walter, Executive Director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency. “This project brings the healthy homes concept to life, advancing community well-being by bringing the might and ingenuity of University Hospital, NJHMFA, The City of Newark, and our many development and community partners together to create a healthy, green, and supportive living and wellness center in the heart of Newark.”

The Center is located at 388 West Market Street in Newark, and is currently open Monday thru Friday, 8am – 4:30pm. Patients can schedule an appointment at the University Hospital Health and Wellness Center by calling 973-972-1000.
