How You Can Help
Volunteers work with patients, staff, families, and visitors in over 30 areas of the hospital. Assignments range from those with some patient contact to those with minimal or no patient contact. There are even long-distance assignments for the enthusiastic but homebound volunteer. The Volunteer Services Department works very hard to ensure that the jobs assigned to each volunteer match closely with their interests and schedule. Take a look!
Book Cart Couriers
Volunteer will distribute books and magazines to patients on the nursing units and also the waiting rooms.
Volunteer will enjoy playing board games with children. Reading stories to children and participating in arts and crafts with our pediatric patients. Must demonstrate patience and enjoy being around children.
Provide comfort to patients visiting the Emergency Department
Visit patient’s bedside, to chat, read, play cards or games, etc.
Meet and greet visitors and patients, hand out visitor cards
Pet Visiting Program
Spend quality time with your dog and bring joy to our patients and their families
Provide clerical assistance and assist with patients as requested.
Patient Care Unit Assistant
Volunteers will assist staff with daily duties of providing patient care, which can also include making copies, running errands, and telephone coverage

Waiting Room Liaison
Assist as a liaison to keep family members abreast of the status of their love ones.
Volunteer Guide will work with University Hospital Greeters to escort patients to locations throughout the hospital. Volunteer must have the ability to communicate effectively and clearly with diverse groups of people. Must be able to walk, stand, push, pull, and lift.
Assignments with Minimal to No Patient Contact:
Administrative Support Volunteer
Volunteer will assist with filing, basic computer work, answering telephones, running errands, and special projects as needed. Must have customer service skills.
Help to maintain the hospital clothing room by sorting and hang up clothing.
Data Entry Clerk
Assist with basic data entry, filing, and other clerical functions as needed. Volunteer should have some basic knowledge of computer programs.
Assist with tray preparation, straighten tables and stock silverware canisters
“On Call” Special Event Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers who live close to University Hospital with free time during the week between the hours of 9am and 5pm, who will be on call for special projects as they come up. Projects included but are not limited to the following: mailings, filing, hostesses, and projects.
