At Your Service Intern Program

Our At Your Service Intern Program allows college students that are studying Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, Pre-Medicine, or Hospitality to engage in a non-clinical learning experience at University Hospital. Participants will contribute to the enhancement of the patient and guest experience in a variety of ways. Students will proactively round on inpatient units to assist with non-clinical needs including:

  • Checking on patient comfort levels to ensure that they are having a positive experience
  • Logging and tracking visits within the department
  • Communicate patient feedback to the team.

As health care shifts from a volume to value system, health care professionals need to adapt their practice to meet the changing needs of the industry and patients alike. Meeting the needs of patients and their loved ones is a strategic imperative. Improving the patient perception of care by learning to connect with empathy, and increasing the efficiency with which care is delivered is a differentiator for medical professionals.

Patient/Guest Impact:
In addition to providing patients and guests with more meaningful experiences, this program will also improve responsiveness to their needs. As an integral part of the Guest Relations Team, interns will help the organization to define the services and assistance that bring the most value to patients, and connect all patients and guests through empathy.

Learning Objectives:
Care providers across the spectrum believe that the conversations and care that they provide are perceived as empathetic and compassionate. Oftentimes, a disconnect exists between the perception and reality. By teaching empathy to the participants, they will learn how to connect more meaningfully with patients, and how these types of connections foster better outcomes and market share.

They will also have the opportunity to provide hospitality services, which include: business services(mailing, faxing/scanning and copying for patients), providing information about hospital and the City of Newark, assisting with obtaining taxi service, hotel and restaurant reservations, notary services, flower and gift delivery to patients, and providing assistance with the book and information cart. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

This program requires that you commit to providing 6 hours per week of service throughout the semester.
