Hon. Donald T. DiFrancesco, chairman of the Board of Directors for University Hospital, announced yesterday that, after an extensive nationwide search, John N. Kastanis, FACHE, will become the hospital’s new president and chief executive officer. Mr. Kastanis recently announced his resignation from his current position as President and CEO of Temple University Hospital where he has been an effective leader since 2011. He is expected to assume his post at University Hospital by March 1, 2016. Nancy Hamstra, the Interim President and CEO, will remain in her position until that time, and thereafter she will continue her responsibilities as the Chief Operating Officer.
Mr. Kastanis is a highly experienced and accomplished executive who has been the chief executive officer at safety-net hospitals in New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. He has proven to be an effective and productive leader, working closely with hospital and medical staff leadership.
His accomplishments at Temple University Hospital include significant improvement in the hospital’s financial performance, posting positive net margins from FY 2012 to FY 2015. The hospital’s clinical performance improvement boosted the institution’s national stature considerably, earning numerous awards, and per the University Healthsystem Consortium's (“UHC”) rankings, Temple University Hospital is currently listed as 17th in the nation among academic medical centers, up from 65th two years ago.
Mr. Kastanis earned an MBA in Health Care Administration from Baruch College-Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In addition to Board Certification in Healthcare Management as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (“ACHE”), he is an Advanced Member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (“HFMA”).
