ROBERT L. BARCHI, MD. PHD.
Robert L. Barchi, a neuroscientist, clinical neurologist, and educator, has served as president of Rutgers University since September 2012, where he has overseen the integration of most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey into Rutgers. He spent more than three decades on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, where he founded the Department of Neuroscience, directed the Mahoney Institute for Neurological Sciences, and served for five years as provost and chief academic officer. An NIH-funded researcher throughout his career, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1993 in recognition of his pioneering research on molecular signaling in nerve and muscle cells. From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research.
He was appointed to the University Hospital Community Oversight Board on July 18, 2013.
